No more snooze button—the issue of homelessness around the nation is giving you a wake-UP call! 3.5 Million Americans are homeless each year in the United States! Recent figures show that 1 in 50 children in the U.S. are homeless with most being under the age of 5. This year the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Program Washington DC site is focusing on HIV/AIDS and homelessness awareness. As a Howard University student, you are a DC resident, but were you aware that on a typical day about 6, 954 people are homeless, however, the shelters can only accommodate beds for 2,000? Nationwide, 1.7 million people under 18 will experience homelessness each year, most being runaways, and 40% are African-American. So what can you do? ASB Participants hope to bring awareness to DC residents about homelessness as well as support local organizations that are working to see the end of this issue, during the week. For those of you going to Cabo or Miami, no worries, there are post-Spring Break volunteer opportunities! Check out the Howard University ASB Program on Friday, March 8th from 12 PM-2 PM for our first Homeless on the Yard Demonstration to receive more information and resources for the homeless. Entering the world of the homeless, for most, was the result of an unfortunate personal tragedy and now is our time to help. Pick up the phone and answer the call that will help lead us to a nation where no one is homeless!!

ASB Week!! Come out and support our events!! You can start with a generous donation for today’s RADIO-THON that is going on all day today!
It’s that time of year again, that’s right…National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (February 7th) and Valentine’s Day! However, what is different about February 14th for you this year? Well for starters, you can be prepared for the unexpected [or expected ;)], by helping to protect yourself from the spread of STDs, particularly, HIV. Did you know that every 9.5 minutes someone in the United States is infected with HIV? How about that one in five individuals living with HIV are unaware of their infection status?
This year the Alternative Spring Break Program Washington DC site is focusing on HIV/AIDS and homelessness awareness. As a Howard University student you are a DC resident, but were you aware that the HIV infection rate in the District is 2.7%, which is well above the 1% epidemic level established by the World Health Organization? During Spring Break, we hope to bring awareness to DC residents about this public health issue as well as support local organizations that are working to combat the spread of HIV.
Currently, condoms are one of the few barrier methods to protect yourself from STIs, so please come out to the Lower Level of Blackburn on Valentine’s Day 2013 to receive your complementary Trojan brand condom, coupon for condom purchase, and other lovely goodies! Will you decide to wrap it up this Valentine’s Day and 3-Day President’s Day Weekend?! Only 500 condoms are available, so get them while they are hot, because remember “No glove, no love!”

We will forever love and miss you, Donald Albert “AJ” Hill Jr.
Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel filled with Howard University students, professors and administrators as well as Reverend and Mrs. Hill for the home-going service of the dearly departed Donald Albert “AJ” Hill Jr. on Thursday, January 17, 2013.
Donald Hill was a junior, Legal Communications major from Winston Salem, N.C. He was an Annenberg Scholar in the School of Communications who had an uplifting spirit and could not help but shine his light on others through his encouraging messages, humility, and love for God. He inspired his peers at Howard University through his extraordinary community service. Hill was so immensely passionate about helping others that he became a part of the Alternative Spring Break family by participating in ASB Chicago: 2011. He continued his commitment to service by returning to Chicago in 2012 where the theme P.E.A.C.E (Promoting Education, Advocacy, and Community Engagement) was initiated.
“Donald was the epitome of what every man should be,” says Joseph Dillard, a senior Political Science major. “He displayed genuine love and service to everyone that he came in contact with.”
Donald Hill was serving as the Site Coordinator for Alternative Spring Break Chicago 2013 before he passed. His dream was to spread awareness about Chicago’s gun violence. He was persistent in making sure that gun violence was recognized so that gun laws could be mandated around the world.
“He was like a brother to everyone he met. He had a very warm personality and a calm spirit,” says Jennifer Brooks, a junior Legal Communications major.
In honor of Donald Hill, a scholarship will be made in his name. He will forever be loved and missed, and his smile will never be forgotten.
